Mafer Turrent, a woman from Veracruz, was released after being held in preventive detention in Mexico City due to reports of domestic violence by her ex-husband. The latter sought to take custody of their three children, despite Mafer having reported him several times.
After her situation became public and marches were organized in Veracruz demanding her release, federal authorities intervened in the case. Finally, Mafer was released on January 22. The Secretary of Women, Citlalli Hernández, denounced the corruption and use of false reports to attack women.
The prosecutor of Mexico City, Bertha Alcalde, dismissed the prosecutor in charge of Mafer's case, determining that there were no reasons for her indictment. The collective Brujas del Mar demanded justice for Mafer, guaranteeing not only her release but also the protection of her and her children, as well as the investigation and prosecution of her aggressor.
Mafer Turrent managed to reach safety in her hometown after reporting the violence and threats from her ex-partner, Edgar N. Despite the complaints filed, they did not make significant progress, and her ex-husband continued to harass her, even falsely implicating her in crimes related to the retention of their children.
Feminist collectives went viral with Mafer's reports to raise awareness of her case and pressure for her release. After spending several days in preventive detention, Mafer was released, thanks to the intervention of federal authorities and the support of various organizations advocating for the rights of women in situations of domestic violence.
